How to Make Southern Dumplings

Ingredients

For the dumplings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons butter or shortening

  • ¾ cup milk (add a little more if needed)

For the broth

  • 6 cups chicken broth (or water + bouillon)

  • Optional: cooked chicken, black pepper


Instructions

1. Make the dumpling dough

  • In a bowl, mix flour and salt.

  • Cut in butter or shortening until crumbly.

  • Stir in milk a little at a time until a soft dough forms.

  • Knead gently for about 1 minute (don’t overwork).
